Joseph Scalia

Mr. Scalia has lectured for the American Trial Lawyers Association on the topics of personal injury and workers’ compensation. In addition to personal injury and general civil litigation, Mr. Scalia has had extensive experience in workers’ compensation claims, real estate matters, wills and estate matters, social security disability claims and corporate/business matters. He has served in various municipalities as a municipal prosecutor and a municipal public defender and, thereafter, as a Municipal Court Judge.

Mr. Scalia has also participated in numerous appellate matters before the appeals courts of both New York and New Jersey. As a result of the arguments presented to and adopted by the Appellate Division of the Superior Court of the State of New Jersey, the legislature there modified the laws regarding the application of mechanic’s liens. In another case, since cited with approval by the Supreme Court of New Jersey, the Appellate Division there ruled in the favor of Mr. Scalia’s client and adopted Mr. Scalia’s interpretation of a section of the workers’ compensation statutes after they had just been revised by the State legislature. That interpretation of the “coming and going rule” remains the law of that state. In New York, Mr. Scalia has successfully argued personal injury cases before its Appellate Division which have been published in its Court Reporter.

Mr. Scalia maintains his primary residence in Farmingville, New York, where he resides with his wife, Sonja, and their two children Michael and Krista. His oldest child, Marissa Scalia-Sucosky, an epidemiologist with the Center for Disease Control, resides in South Bend, Indiana, with her husband, Dr. Philippe Sucosky, a professor at the University Of Notre Dame.

Mr. Scalia is the son of Sam and Susan Scalia who for many years operated a business in Lake Ronkonkoma. Mr. Scalia’s sister, Marie Albrecht, resides in Setauket with her husband, Donald Albrecht. Marie Albrecht is the former proprietor of “The Small Shop” in St. James which engaged in the sale of antiques, dolls and collectibles. Donald Albrecht is retired after serving for many years as the principal of Grundy Avenue School in the Sachem School District.

Mr. Scalia has two brothers, both of whom are also graduates of Sachem High School. Victor Scalia resides in Maryland where he is an officer of a large real estate development firm. Anthony Scalia resides in Wading River, New York. He is the president and owner of L.T. Sales Corp., a company engaged in the development, sales and distribution of photo identification systems and graphic arts products.
